Benicia is a waterside city in Solano County, California, located in the San Francisco Bay Area. It was once the California capital for nearly thirteen months, from 1853 to 1854. The 2010 United States Census reported a population of 26,997.

Benicia State Recreation Area

Benicia State Recreation Area is a California state park unit protecting a tidal wetland. The park is located in the Solano County city of Benicia, two miles west of downtown. The park borders the nearby city of Vallejo in the Glen Cove neighborhood.

Benicia State Recreation Area has approximately 720 acres of land and 2.5 miles of hiking trails. The park also features campgrounds. Camping is only permitted at the state park for motorhomes and other vehicles with trailers. The cost to park a vehicle is $6 per day. The trails are accessible for people of all ages and abilities. Guests with pets should bring their own waste bags and a bag for their dog. Be aware that venomous snakes and coyotes have been spotted in the park. Also, bug spray is necessary in all seasons.

Benicia State Recreation Area is part of the California State Parks System. The state park is located just 2 miles west of downtown Benicia. It borders the Vallejo Glen Cove community and the town of Benicia in Solano County. The park features 447 acres of marsh and rocky beaches that border San Pablo Bay.

Fisher-Hanlon House

Located next to the State Capitol Building, the Fischer-Hanlon House is a former hotel that was refurbished in the late 1800s. It later served as a house of prostitution. In the late 1960s, the family donated the house to the State of California for preservation and open public access. Now, the house offers tours and is part of the Benicia Capitol State Historic Park. Visitors can view the house and its garden, which is home to a century-old wisteria.
