Places to Go in Dauphin Alabama

If you’re a beach lover, Dauphin Island is a great place to go. The small island is the gateway to Mobile Bay and is dotted with beautiful white sand beaches. There’s a 19th-century fort and blacksmith shop on the island, and you can also explore the Audubon Bird Sanctuary’s wetlands. If you’re looking for some indoor activities, you can visit the Sea Lab, which houses aquariums and a living marsh boardwalk.

Sand Island Lighthouse

Visit the Sand Island Lighthouse and see the southernmost point in Alabama. It’s located near Dauphin Island at the mouth of Mobile Bay. The lighthouse is a historical site that is also a popular tourist attraction. It was built in 1876 and serves as a reminder of the Civil War.

Sand Island Lighthouse is an iconic destination on Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Located three miles off the shoreline, the lighthouse has a colorful history. During the Civil War, it was one of the Union forces’ favorite targets. However, a Confederate soldier destroyed the lighthouse with gunpowder so that it would be out of reach of enemy forces.

Dauphin Island is also home to the only lighthouse in the state. The lighthouse kept watch over the Mobile Bay waters for almost a century. The lightkeepers were paid $500 a year to keep the lighthouse. However, the lighthouse was blown up by Confederate forces in 1861.

The lighthouse is three miles off the coast of Fort Morgan. The first lighthouse was built in 1871 and was designed to use the largest lens possible. Over the years, it has gone through several transformations. It is no longer a working lighthouse, but residents of the island have worked hard to preserve it. They have even moved tons of rock to make the land around the tower larger.

The lighthouse is also accessible by boat. A select number of boat services bring visitors to the island but these services are not well established. Many visitors opt to view it from afar. Located at the end of Mobile Bay, the lighthouse is visible from the water. It was used as a primary point of guidance for mariners coming from the Gulf of Mexico. The Dauphin Island Marina also offers marina cruises that allow people to visit the lighthouse.
