It has a historic cotton mill

Laurel, Maryland, is known as the “cotton mill town” and has a unique museum located in an 1836 cotton mill workers’ house. The museum was renovated by the City of Laurel and opened to the public on May 1, 1996. This museum features a variety of exhibits that explore the history of Laurel, Maryland and the cotton mill industry.

The Laurel mills reflect the changing face of cotton manufacturing in the late nineteenth century. The Patuxent mill was destroyed by fire in 1855 and rebuilt, though it closed for much of the Civil War. The mills were able to resume operation several times after the Civil War, and steam power was introduced as a backup for the cotton spinning and carding machines. By the year 1921, both the main cotton mill and the Patuxent mill were closed.

The Patuxent River provided a major source of water for the cotton mill. It was the major thoroughfare for transportation in the early nineteenth century. The town was built around a river and became a commuter town for Washington and Baltimore workers. The town expanded when the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad arrived in 1835. Nicholas Snowden founded the first cotton mill in Laurel, which expanded the area’s manufacturing industry. After his death, the mill was divided among his heirs. A few of the heirs merged their holdings to form the Patuxent Cotton Manufacturing Company.

The town expanded and the post office had to expand. In 1917, the post office was located on Main Street. Its size was so large that it was able to handle the mail for the military base at Camp Meade. In 1924, the post office was upgraded to second class office status, which meant that it had free carrier service. Prior to this, the town had two mail carriers.
